How to Prepare for a Branding Session

Let’s be real, prepping for a branding session can feel like a lot. You’re not only picking outfits, but you’re also trying to communicate who you are, what you do, and why people should care… in a few photos.

No pressure, right?

However, a good branding session is about being intentional. If you focus on that, everything else gets a lot easier.

Here’s how to actually prepare without overcomplicating it.

1. Get Clear on Your Brand

If you skip this step, everything else is going to feel chaotic.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I want people to feel when they land on my page?
  • What kind of clients am I trying to attract?
  • Am I polished and professional, bold and edgy, soft and approachable… or something in between?

Your photos should match the experience people get when they work with you. Not just what you think looks good.

If your brand is moody and elevated, showing up in bright rainbow colors is going to confuse people.
If your brand is playful and loud, an all-black corporate outfit probably isn’t it.

2. Plan Your Outfits

I’m gonna say it: your outfits matter more than you think.

Not because they need to be expensive or trendy, but because they set the tone of your entire shoot.

A few rules that will save you:

  • Stick to 2–4 outfits max, depending on how long your session is. I recommend 2-3 for an hour session
  • Choose pieces that align with your brand colors
  • Avoid tiny patterns

And please try everything on beforehand. Not five minutes before your session. Like… days before.

Confidence shows up on camera. If you’re adjusting your shirt every two seconds, it will show.

3. Think in Content, Not Just “Photos”

This is where you start thinking more like a business owner.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I need website banners?
  • Instagram posts?
  • Story content?
  • Launch graphics?

Your session should give you assets, not just pretty photos you post once and forget about.

We can create:

  • Horizontal images for your website
  • Vertical content for reels and stories
  • Close-ups, wide shots, detail shots

If you don’t plan for this, you’ll end up loving your photos… and still not having what you actually need. Detail shots are especially important so you don’t have to constantly post your face!

4. Don’t Skip the Details

Little things can either elevate your shoot or completely distract from it. Before your shoot, I create a branding blueprint for you with an outfit guide, mood board, posing guide, props to bring, and an accessory guide. This is so you can feel more prepared for your shoot.

You’ll want to think:

  • Clean, neutral nails or a color that fits your brand
  • Jewelry that adds
  • Steamed clothes (wrinkles will humble you real quick)
  • Props that fit your brand (I will give you ideas)

5. Trust the Process

I get it. Being in front of the camera is uncomfortable for most people. I even feel uncomfortable being in front of a camera.

But you don’t need to know how to pose. That’s my job. We’ll curate a posing board to reference during your session so we’re both prepared during your session!

However, your job is to show up open, willing, and ready to be seen.

6. Give Yourself Time

A strong branding session isn’t thrown together in a week. I recommend booking at least a month in advance to make sure everything is planned perfectly.

The clients who get the best results are the ones who treat this like an investment, not a quick task to check off.

Final Thought

When you prepare with intention, you walk away with content that works for you… not just content that looks good.

If you’re ready to create something that actually reflects your brand (and doesn’t feel forced or generic), you know where to find me!
